An open letter to my Senators
Dear Senator,
The Constitution of the United States says:
No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States;…. (Amendment 14, Section 1)
The Bible says:
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. (Leviticus 18:22)
Only one of these documents applies to the ruling of our country. When it comes to the rights of my fellow Americans, that’s the document I refer to. But it appears that the highest-ranking officer in our government feels we should be adhering to his own higher standard – at the cost of liberties instrumental to the foundation of our great nation.
By proposing the Federal Marriage Amendment, George W. Bush has informed the homosexual community that he feels they are less entitled to the rights and liberties accorded each of us as citizens of the United States. He has declared that the rulings of his god should dictate these decisions, rather than the people being governed – a tremendous step back from the intentions of our founding fathers. This country was founded on freedom from religious tyrrany; to insert the word of one faction’s god into our most basic law document is grossly backwards and incorrect.
Historically, our Constitution has existed to remind our law makers and enforcers of our basic human rights. Nearly every amendment exists to provide Americans with more freedoms, rather than less. In fact, several amendments are written solely to ensure that no adult, regardless of color, race, gender, age, or tax delinquency, is denied the right to vote. To place a limitation on same-sex love directly into this document is an abomination of the worst kind, evidencing that we have learned nothing from past injustices.
Marriage is about love, at its most base level, and not about a god or a book whose laws are, at best, several thousand years old. We certainly aren’t crucifying and stoning treasonous heretics anymore; why should we discriminate against gays just because the Bible says it’s wrong? This is an irrational and unreasonable argument for incorporating this tenet into our laws.
What’s more, our Constitution explicitly states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;…” (Amendment 1). There is a certain irony that the Federal Marriage Amendment, as derived from Judeo-Christian discipline and the orders of its god, in itself is unconstitutional. In accepting his office, Mr. Bush swore to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Now he seems forsworn to pervert it.
Growing up, I frequently recited the mantra, “It’s a free country, and I have rights.” The further George W. Bush, his clique, and his god have sought to limit them, however, the less sure of this fact I become. Ensure my rights, Senator. Vote against the Federal Marriage Amendment.
